Azathioprine may cause some side effects that are not serious. These include hair loss, a skin rash and some digestive issues, such as nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea or loss of appetite. Other side effects are very serious. If you have an allergic reaction (marked by a swollen face and mouth, a rash, hives or difficulty breathing), get help immediately. Call 911. Other reasons to see a doctor immediately: paled skin, easy bruising or bleeding or feeling unusually weak. Additionally, see a doctor if you develop a fever with chills, sore throat, body aches and muscle pain or become seriously nauseated with vomiting or diarrhea, or if you have severe stomach and back pain with a rapid heart rate. Other severe symptoms include: jaundice, clay-colored stools or dark urine or white spots or sores inside the mouth or on the lips.
