What is tizanidine?

Tizanidine, which is known by the brand name Zanaflex, is a muscle relaxer. It helps reduce muscle tightness and spasms in conditions such as multiple sclerosis and injuries to the spinal cord. It is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that interrupts nerve signals to the brain, decreasing spasms, thereby reducing pain and allowing the affected person to be more mobile. It is a short-acting drug that usually peaks within one to two hours and may last anywhere from three to eight hours. It is taken orally and comes in tablet or capsule form. Tizanidine can be taken with or without food, however, depending on whether you are taking the tablet or capsule, you will take it consistently either always with or always without food  The medication in the capsule is absorbed differently by the body than the medication in the tablet, so one product cannot be substituted for the other.
