What is probenecid?

Probenecid is a prescription medication that treats gout and gouty arthritis. Both these conditions are caused by high blood levels of uric acid, which form urate crystals that accumulate in your joints, causing pain and inflammation. Probenecid relieves symptoms by reducing uric acid blood levels. While not a cure for gout, Probenecid can help prevent future attacks. Probenecid may also be used to increase the effectiveness of some antibiotics by preventing them from passing easily into urine.
