What is Allopurinol?

Allopurinol is a medication that helps treat gout (a type of arthritis) and other conditions related to high levels of uric acid in the body , including some cancers. It is also used to treat some kinds of kidney stones or other kidney conditions. Allopurinol belongs to a group of medications known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors, which work by reducing levels of uric acid in the body. Some medications or medical treatments can lead to increased levels of uric acid. Since allopurinol reduces these levels, it may also be prescribed for other conditions and to help increase the success of some medical procedures. Allopurinol may also be prescribed to help treat seizures, reduce pain caused by pancreas disease, prevent rejection of kidney transplants, reduce the reoccurrence of ulcers, and improve survival after bypass surgery.
