What are the side effects of onabotulinumtoxinA?

OnabotulinumtoxinA has side effects that may vary depending on where on your body you received the injection. Some could appear right away and others may not show up for several weeks after treatment. You may bruise or have some irritation where you get the onabotulinumtoxinA injection. More common side effects that should lessen over time include the following: anxiety, cough, diarrhea, difficulty closing the eyes, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, dry or irritated eyes, fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, nausea, pain or tightness in the face, runny nose or congestion, sweating from parts of the body other than the underarm, teary eyes, tight muscles, or weakness or swelling at the injection site. If these symptoms persist, call your doctor. Other side effects of onabotulinumtoxinA, though less common, can be more severe. You should call your doctor right away if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: arm pain, back and neck pain, chest pain, difficulty moving the face, dizziness, eyelid drooping or swelling, eyesight issues (vision loss, drainage, crusting around the eyes), fainting, hives, hoarse voice, irregular heartbeat, itching, jaw pain, loss of bladder control, muscle weakness in an untreated area, rash, seizures, shortness of breath, or swelling of the ankles, hands, feet, or lower legs. If you exhibit any side effects that could indicate an allergic reaction like difficulty breathing or hives, and especially if you have any swelling in the mouth or throat that makes it hard to swallow or speak, seek treatment immediately.
