Common side effects of allopurinol sodium for injection include, drowsiness and gastrointestinal distress (diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain). Tell your doctor if any of these side effects persist or become severe.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these serious side effects while being treated with allopurinol sodium:

  • signs of allergic reaction (skin rash, hives, itching, facial swelling, or blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin)
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • difficulty passing urine
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
  • severe fatigue or weakness
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting

Other side effects may be more serious. Frequently, people experience a skin rash that can become dangerous. Contact your doctor if you develop a skin rash or other signs of an allergic reaction like hives, itching, and facial swelling. Other dangerous side effects include:

  • difficulty passing urine
  • loss of appetite
  • redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • unusually weak or tired
  • vomiting
  • yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
