What should I know about Dantrolene before taking it?

Before taking dantrolene, you should be aware of the following safety information:
  • Dantrolene has the potential to cause severe liver damage. People with liver disease should not take this drug. Women, especially those over 35 years of age, are more likely to experience liver disease while taking dantrolene.
  • It can weaken your muscles; do not take it when you need muscle tone for balance or other activities.
  • This medication can affect swallowing. Talk to your doctor if you have trouble eating or are choking while taking this dantrolene.      
  • Alcohol increases dantrolene's effects and should be avoided.
  • While taking dantrolene, use caution when driving or participating in other activities that require mental alertness.
  • Children under five years of age should not take dantrolene.
  • Talk to your doctor about the risks versus the benefits of dantrolene if you are  pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
  • Dantrolene can interact with other medications. Certain medications, including cold and allergy medications, antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications may increase the sleepiness associated with dantrolene. Tell your doctor about all of the medications you may be taking, including prescription medications (notably blood pressure medications and birth control pills), over-the-counter medications, vitamins and nutritional supplements.
  • Dantrolene can increase sun sensitivity. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing when exposed to the sun while taking this drug.
