Are there other drugs for gout besides Colcrys?

Several new medications may help relieve the miserable symptoms of gout. Colcrys is a brand name for the generic drug colchicine. Before prescribing Colcrys, most doctors will see if you get relief with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or a corticosteroid such as prednisone. Colcrys works by lowering levels of uric acid, which causes painful crystals to form in joints, especially in the big toe. It's most effective when taken within the first 12 hours after a gout attack. There are other medications that lower uric acid, however. They include older drugs such as allopurinol and probenecid and newer medications like (Uloric) febuxostat. If gout is still causing problems for you, talk to your doctor about other therapies that might help.
