What should I know about penicillamine before taking it?

In rare cases, penicillamine can cause severe side effects, including blood and lung complications. If you experience a fever, chills, sore throat, bruising or bleeding, you may have a blood problem. Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and noisy breathing are symptoms of a lung problem. Penicillamine can also cause birth defects and typically should not be taken if you are pregnant. Penicillamine can interact with certain medications, altering their effectiveness. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have, allergies to penicillamine or penicillin and medications you take prior to taking penicillamine.
