You should take penicillamine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The medication should be taken on an empty stomach, either one hour before or two hours after a meal. Because penicillamine is a chelating agent, it should be taken at least two hours before or after other medications that contain metals, such as antacids or iron supplements. Drink plenty of water, at least two, eight ounce glasses at bedtime and again during the night. Depending on the condition penicillamine is prescribed to treat, you may need to take this medication three to four times per day.
