How should I take Allopurinol?

You should take allopurinol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Allopurinol is usually taken once or twice daily, after meals. If you are taking allopurinol for gout, you will usually start with a low dose and slowly increase the dosage over the first week. Your doctor may also prescribe another medication such as colchicine to manage your gout attacks during the first month you take allopurinol. If you are taking allopurinol for surgery or medical procedures, you will usually begin the medication three days prior to the procedure. Take allopurinol at the same time every day to help keep medication levels in your body stable.
