How does penicillamine treat kidney stones?

The buildup of minerals and salts inside your kidneys may form a small, hard deposit known as a kidney stone. Several different types of stones may form, depending on the type of mineral or salt responsible for the build up. One type of kidney stone is caused by a hereditary disorder called cystinuria, where oversecretion of the cystine can cause kidney stones. Penicillamine can treat kidney stones caused by cystinuria. Penicillamine is a chelating agent and binds to excess cystine, helping the kidneys to remove the cystine through urine.
