How does cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) work?

Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) works to relax muscles by affecting the central nervous system. Although scientists do not completely understand how it works, they think it acts somewhat like tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline), which regulates the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Since it affects the nervous system and is not a local anti-inflammatory, it may be taken with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, like aspirin or ibuprofen.
