How does colchicine work?

The prescription drug colchicine works to relieve or prevent symptoms of gout. It does this by preventing uric acid crystals from forming in the joints, which can cause swelling and pain, or "gout attacks." These crystals can cause pain and literally damage the joints. If not controlled, gout can lead to severe osteoarthritis and other joint damage.
