Probenecid comes as a tablet that you take by mouth. When you first start taking it, your doctor will probably suggest you take 250 milligrams (mg.) twice a day for one week, then go up to 500 mg. twice daily if needed. If this dose is not enough to control your gout, the best way to increase the dose is slowly, by 500 mg. a month, until you reach the dose that helps you. Probenecid is best taken with plenty of water, and if stomach upset occurs it may be taken with food. Remember that, as with many drugs, there is a maximum safe daily dose; in the case of probenecid, the most you should take each day is two to three grams. Also, remember that you should always take probenecid, and other medicines, as directed by your doctor; if you are unclear about how to take your medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
