Are there any risks associated with taking azathioprine?

Azathioprine can increase the risk of infection. It is extremely important that you take special caution to reduce your risk of infection or of contracting an illness. Getting a vaccination while on this medication can be very risky. Azathioprine also can reduce fertility in both men and women. In addition, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take azathioprine. It is harmful to a fetus and nursing infant. Azathioprine has been linked to an increased risk for certain cancers, particularly lymphoma and skin cancers.
