What problems are associated with crooked teeth and misaligned bites?

Miriam T. Furlong

Crooked teeth can be harder to clean, and if they don't bite together properly it can cause them to chip or crack. They may even get loose and lead to premature tooth loss in some cases.

A badly aligned bite can be harder to chew with, and can even affect speech. In some cases it can lead to pain in the jaw joint as well.

In addition, studies have shown that many people have improved self-esteem, and are perceived by others as being more successful and intelligent if they have an attractive smile.
Problems caused by crooked teeth and misaligned bites include:
  • Tooth decay and gum disease because it's hard to keep crooked, crowded teeth clean.
  • Difficulty chewing because the teeth don't come together properly.
  • Greater risk of breaking a tooth from the stresses of misaligned bite or because the tooth sticks out.
  • Strain on the muscles and joints of the jaw.
  • Embarrassment about your dental appearance.

An abnormal bite or teeth that are missing or crooked can lead to teeth grinding, or bruxism. And doing so can lead to:

  • dull headaches
  • jaw soreness
  • teeth that are painful or loose
  • fractured teeth
