What are some home remedies for motion sickness?

Early research indicates that the following non-medication alternative therapies may be helpful in reducing motion sickness symptoms:

  • Ginger. This root herb has been shown in scientific studies to reduce symptoms of motion sickness. Compounds in ginger help calm the stomach by relaxing the intestinal tract. They may slightly depress the central nervous system as well.
  • Acupressure. This gentle, needle-free alternative to acupuncture may reduce nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness. Applying pressure approximately two finger-widths below the inside of the wrist has been suggested to provide relief. Several elastic wristbands are commercially available that stimulate these points when worn.
  • Peppermint and black horehound. Although they have not been extensively studied for use in treating motion sickness, herbs such as peppermint and black horehound have been shown to reduce nausea.
