The prescription drug guanfacine treats high blood pressure, either on its own or in combination with other drugs. Guanfacine extended-release tablets are sometimes used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, in children. Guanfacine is classified as a centrally acting alpha2A-adrenergic receptor agonist. It dilates blood vessels and decreases heart rate to lower high blood pressure. It also may affect the part of the brain responsible for impulsivity and attention, in treating ADHD. It is marketed under the brand names Tenex and Intuniv.
