Calan is a calcium channel blocker that controls high blood pressure, angina, and an irregular heartbeat. By loosening the blood vessels, Calan allows the heart to relax so that it doesn't have to pump as hard. In this way, a greater supply of blood and oxygen make it to the heart, slowing electrical activity and allowing for a more regular heart rate. Calan is a brand name for this heart and blood medication. It is also available as Calan SR, Isoptin SR, Verelan, Verelan PM, and in a combination drug called Tarka. The generic version of Calan is called Verapamil. Verapamil also happens to be the name of the active ingredient in this medication.
