What should I know about Inderal LA before using it?

Inderal is a brand of propranolol, which is a beta blocker. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure. Beta blockers like Inderal can also dilate the blood vessels, helping to prevent migraines. Inderal can affect the results of a blood sugar test. Before using Inderal it's important to talk to your doctor about its effects and how it may affect other health conditions you have, including:

  • breathing disorders, such as bronchitis or emphysema
  • diabetes
  • low blood pressure
  • heart disorders, such as heart block, slow heart rate, arrhythmia due to sinus node disorder or congestive heart failure
  • depression
  • liver or kidney disease
  • thyroid disorder
  • pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor)
  • Raynaud's disease (circulation disorder that limits blood flow to certain areas of the body)

Tell your doctor about any medications that you are using to treat a health condition, as well as any allergies to beta blockers or other medications, foods or other substances. When taking Inderal, it's important to take your medication exactly as prescribed, even when your symptoms have improved. If you suddenly stop taking your medication it can cause unwanted effects, particularly if you have a heart disease such as coronary artery disease or ischemic heart disease. Because Inderal LA is an extended-release form of Inderal medication, the capsule should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water. Do not chew, crush or open the capsule before swallowing it. This medication is designed to release slowly into the body; too much Inderal at once can cause severe side effects. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
