How does Isoptin SR interact with other medications or foods?

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact dangerously with the blood pressure/heart medicine Isoptin SR (verapamil). Talk to your doctor before you eat or drink anything made with grapefruit. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Isoptin SR. It can reduce your blood pressure more than expected and may increase some of the medication's side effects. You should not take Isoptin SR with the following: disopyramide, dofetilide, hawthorn, pimozide or red yeast rice. Isoptin SR also can interact with many other medications, including antibiotics and antifungals; barbiturates, including phenobarbital; beta-blockers; buspirone (BuSpar); some cancer drugs; cimetidine (Tagamet); cyclosporine; lithium; general or local anesthetics; sedatives; theophylline medications for heart or heart rhythm problems.
