How should I take propranolol?

Propranolol is taken orally and comes in tablets, capsules, and solution formulations. Extended-release capsules are usually taken once per day, and immediate-acting tablets, usually taken two to four times per day. If taking the solution, you can mix the medication with water, juice, or soft food and immediately take the mixture. Unless your doctor instructs otherwise, propranolol should be taken on an empty stomach. Dosages vary and should be taken according to a doctor's instructions. Taking your medication at the same time each day will help you remember and will maintain a consistent level of propranolol in the blood. Use of propranolol should never be abruptly stopped because the sudden discontinuance of propranolol may cause chest pains or heart attacks. The dosage should be gradually reduced then stopped.
