How does lamotrigine interact with other medications or foods?

Certain medications lower the level of lamotrigine in the blood if you take them while you are also taking lamotrigine. These drugs include rifampin, primidone, phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbazepime, some birth control pills, and some hormone replacement therapies. By contrast, taking lamotrigine with valproic acid and divalproex can result in increased blood levels of lamotrigine. This increases the possibility of side effects, so if these drugs are used with lamotrigine, the dose of lamotrigine should be reduced.

Lamotrigine can also interact with any substance that causes drowsiness or dizziness. Lamotrigine itself can cause these effects, and adding other drugs with similar effects, will potentially increase their occurrence. These substances include alcohol.
