How does Carbatrol treat epilepsy?

Charbamazepine - the active ingredient in Carbatrol - is not yet fully understood, but its effects as an anticonvulsant are proven. It reduces the chance that a person with epilepsy will have a seizure by blocking nerve function and reducing polysynaptic responses. Scientists believe the drug works because the nerves cannot communicate correctly, making it impossible for the body to convulse as it would otherwise.
