How does carbamazepine treat epilepsy?

How carbamazepine works is not yet fully understood, but its effects as an anticonvulsant are proven. It blocks nerve impulse function and reduces chemical brain responses, thereby reducing the chance that a person with epilepsy will have a seizure. Scientists believe the drug works because the nerves cannot communicate correctly, making it impossible for the body to convulse as it would otherwise.
