Carbamazepine - the active ingredient in Carbatrol - keeps nerves from communicating information that would cause pain due to the facial tic trigeminal neuralgia. The drug's effects are not entirely understood, but they do reduce pain associated with convulsions and tics. Carbamazepine depresses reflexes that would otherwise make facial muscles contract, causing pain.
