Are there any risks in taking lamotrigine?

All potential side effects can be considered risks of using lamotrigine. The most serious side effect, for which black box warnings have been issued, is potentially fatal skin rashes. Other serious possible side effects or risks are meningitis, worsening of seizures, depression and suicidal thoughts or behavior, bone marrow problems with low blood cell counts, frequent infections, allergic reactions, and multiorgan failure.

There may also be a risk of damage to the unborn child if lamotrigine is taken during pregnancy. Lamotrigine can cause slow bone development, low weight, and miscarriages in animals, and may be associated with an increased risk of cleft lip and/or palate in humans.
