Are there any risks in taking Carbatrol?

Common side effects of Carbatrol (carbamazepine) include sun sensitivity and susceptibility to sunburn; blood-clotting problems that could cause excessive bleeding; reduced immune system function that could lead to increased risk of infection; and irritability or confusion, especially among older patients.

Women in their childbearing years who taking Carbatrol should take extra precautions against an unwanted pregnancy, as this drug decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills. Carbatrol can  also produce false pregnancy test results. 

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take carbamazepine, as it could harm fetuses and nursing infants.
