Who should take ferrous sulfate?

Ferrous sulfate and other iron supplements are intended to help improve overall health in people with iron deficiency. But people with a greater need for iron or those who lose more iron may get even greater benefits. Those who don’t absorb iron normally also need to take supplements. These people include: 
  • Pregnant women
  • Preterm and low-birth weight infants
  • Older infants and toddlers
  • Teenage girls
  • Women of childbearing age. Those with heavy menstrual losses are at risk.
  • People with renal failure. Those undergoing routine dialysis are at risk.
  • People with gastrointestinal disorders who don’t absorb iron normally
