What are side effects of chromium supplements?

Side effects from chromium supplements depend on the dose. At doses under 200 micrograms (mcg) a day, side effects are minimal. At doses from 200 to 400 mcg a day, some people experience problems like confusion and loss of coordination, as well as weight gain. Other possible side effects include headaches, sleep problems, irritability and changes in mood. Higher doses can have much more serious side effects, including anemia and kidney failure.

The National Academy of Sciences has set the adequate intake for chromium at 35 mcg per day for men ages 19 to 50 and 25 mcg per day for women of the same ages. Do not take large doses of chromium without medical supervision.
