What are the minor side effects of ferrous sulfate?

Although it is generally safe when taken as directed, taking ferrous sulfate may have side effects. Among the more common, less serious, side effects are:

• Constipation
• Upset stomach
• Nausea, which may be relieved by eating
• Diarrhea
• Heartburn
• Black or dark-colored stools
• Temporary staining of the teeth
