What are the side effects of oral iron supplements?

Some possible side effects of oral iron supplements include stomach upset and pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation and heartburn. Taking iron supplements with food may reduce these side effects. Sometimes people notice the color of their bowel movements are darker when they take iron supplements. There is also some evidence of a link between high iron stores in the body and an increased risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease, but more study is needed. Iron supplements should always be kept out of reach of children because high doses of iron can be deadly.
