Common side effects of taking iron are dark stools, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and an upset stomach. Some forms of this drug may also cause teeth staining. It is possible that you could suffer severe side effects from this mineral. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience a severe allergic reaction, which may be characterized by hives, itching, rash, trouble breathing, a tight chest, or swelling of the face, tongue, mouth, or lips. Also seek medical attention if you experience any other severe side effects such as blood or streaks of blood in stool, black or tarry stools, vomiting, fever, or severe stomach pain.
