Epoetin is the man-made form of a natural hormone, called erythropoietin (EPO). Normally, EPO is produced and secreted by the kidneys to stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells. Iron supplements may help maintain the production of hemoglobin needed for the red blood cells. People taking EPO should talk with their physicians before taking iron supplements. Be sure to follow the doctor's directions for taking iron.
