Should I take chromium picolinate supplements to lose weight?

Recently, chromium picolinate has been touted as a natural supplement that can aid in weight loss. Chromium alone is a natural mineral. It can be found in several foods, including meat, vegetable oil and fat. Broccoli, potatoes, carrots, molasses and whole grains, brewer's yeast and eggs also contain chromium. In the supplement form, acidic picolinate is added to the chromium, usually in pill form, help the body better absorb the chromium.

However, because it is a supplement, its benefits have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. The few studies that have been done have recorded no significant increase in weight loss that could not be attributed to exercise and healthy eating alone.

Chromium picolinate may cause severe side effects. Overdoses of chromium picolinate can lead to renal impairment.

Also, studies of hamster cells suggested that the mixture of chromium and picolinate may have caused genetic mutations.
