Can my diet affect how ferrous sulfate works?

What you eat can make it harder to absorb ferrous sulfate and other iron supplements. Here are some guidelines:

• Take iron on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after eating. If stomach upset is a problem, it may be taken with food.
• Be careful when taking antacids. They can make it harder to absorb iron.
• Store pills between 59° and 86°F. Protect from excessive heat, moisture or freezing.
• Take with a full glass of water.
• Swallow pills whole. Don’t crush, chew, break or open extended-release tablets or capsules. This causes the medicine to be released too fast.
• Teeth may be stained temporarily. To prevent this, clean your teeth with baking soda once a week.
