What is MindBodySpirit medicine?

William B. Salt II., MD
Gastroenterology
Mind-body-spirit medicine is the biopsychosocial spiritual model of illness and health.

There are those who propose that belief in science contradicts belief in faith and spirituality. However, throughout history, some of the most brilliant and renowned scientists have held a deep awe and appreciation for the mystery of spirit. Albert Einstein said, "Religion without science is blind, but science without religion is lame." Issues of spirituality are now being brought into mainstream medical education, research and patient care. Many medical schools offer courses and conduct research on religion and spirituality in medicine. For example, Duke University's Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality and Health conducts research that explores the effects of religious/spiritual beliefs and practices on physical and mental health. A recent scientific study showed that persons who attended religious services had significantly lower mortality than those who did not attend.
