What is mind-body therapy?

Mind-body therapies utilize the extraordinary power of the mind to heal the body and are often recommended for incontinence, insomnia, anxiety, phobias, high blood pressure, depression, loss and grief issues, and chronic pain. Some alternative practitioners believe the symptoms of an illness are perceived as outward manifestations of an inner imbalance between the physical, mental and emotional condition of the patient. Around the world, leading scientists and researchers are at last accepting the fact that emotions and feelings are not separate from physical health. Mind-body therapies embrace this holistic approach and work toward relaxing and healing the patient physically and mentally.
Mind-body therapies (MBTs) include meditation, relaxation, hypnosis and imagery. These forms of treatment do not use medicine. MBTs are done with the belief that your feelings, mental health, spiritual beliefs and physical health affect one another. MBTs may be used as part of the treatment plan for certain medical problems. These problems include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), mental disorders, heart disease and insomnia (trouble going to sleep or staying asleep). MBTs may help decrease acute and chronic pain. A mind-body therapy may be used alone, or with other therapies or treatments. Using an MBT may help you feel like you have more control over your health and are more involved in your treatment plan.
