How effective are ergotamines?

Guidelines for treating migraine attacks published by the American Headache Society list the following ergotamines as effective, probably effective, and possibly effective.

  • Effective: dihydroergotamine nasal spray and pulmonary inhaler
  • Probably effective: dihydroergotamine injection, ergotamine/caffeine 
  • Possibly effective: ergotamine
