Irrational beliefs can cause stress, which in turn can lead to headaches. Rational emotive therapy (RET) helps headache sufferers identify and change irrational beliefs. Irrational beliefs are replaced with rational beliefs that no longer elicit stress-provoking headaches. Using this approach, patients have reduced the frequency, duration, and intensity of their migraines, as well as the need for medication.

Irrational beliefs are typically prefaced with the words, should, ought, must, or have to. Rational beliefs are stated with these words, wishes, wants, likes, or dislikes.
