Can household pets develop methanol poisoning?

After humans are exposed to methanol, the dangerous symptoms result when methanol is transformed into formic acid in the body; it is the formic acid that damages the central nervous system. However, pets like dogs, cats, and rodents are able to quickly remove formic acid from their bodies using the large stores of folic acid they possess. Therefore, while they may exhibit the early symptoms of methanol poisoning, like drowsiness or drunkenness, they may not suffer some of the more dangerous later symptoms. Nevertheless, if you suspect your pet has been exposed to methanol, you should contact your veterinarian.
