Because hypercalcemia occur as a result of many different conditions, it is difficult to determine a rate of incidence for the condition. If you are immobilized, suffering from cancer, taking certain medications, such as lithium, you are at an elevated risk for hypercalcemia. Certain other conditions, such as Paget's disease, increase your risk of hypercalcemia. Hyperparathyroidism, a common cause of hypercalcemia, may be hereditary, but doctors do not see genetic components in most cases. Hyperparathyroidism may occur at random, or as a result of kidney failure, vitamin D deficiency, or calcium deficiency.
