Are inherited metabolic disorders serious?

There are about a thousand different inherited metabolic disorders known, and the severity of the disorders ranges a great deal. When caught early enough, many metabolic disorders can be managed with various treatment options, including special diets, vitamins, bone marrow transplants, and medications. Unfortunately, in some cases, no treatment options are available and the disease is fatal, as is the case with Tay-Sachs.
