What treatment options are available for mental retardation?

A team or professionals will work together to create an individualized plan to help meet your child's needs. This team may include social workers, speech therapists, neurologists, pediatricians, psychologists, and educators. Your child will be evaluated to determine the types of support needed. Mental health disorders, physical disabilities, and social skills will be considered when suggesting treatments. Some children will need to take medication. Others will need behavioral therapy or special education. Depending on the severity of the mental retardation, some children will need to attend special schools.
