Should I be optimistic about the future?

Whether we are optimistic or apocalyptic about the future depends on our perspective. Do we focus on what is dying or on what is being born? On the miraculous power contained within man's spirit or on the universal presence of man's destructiveness? Both sides clamor for our attention. But optimism, a confident hopefulness, is neither a blindness to real tragedy nor a personal quirk, fueled by naiveté. It is the hallmark of spiritual thinkers throughout the ages who have been most awake to the truth of our Fourth Instinct. Through and beyond the cruelty, injustice and suffering of the world, they have seen perfection in the making; and although they speak in various languages and images, they have delivered a single message. All have seen, and all teach, that the key that will unlock the next stage in our evolution is already within ourselves. It has been implanted in us.
