What are the classes of mental health problems?

Mental health researchers have identified a number of different classes, or types, of mental disorders. In general, the classes are based on the symptoms (depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and so on) and the likely course of the illness. The major classes of mental illness are: mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance-related disorders, psychotic disorders, cognitive (thinking) disorders, development disorders, and personality disorders. Many other problems, such as eating disorders, fall outside these classes but are still considered mental disorders.
