What are the causes of mental health problems?

Problems with mental health can have many different causes. Often several factors combine to cause the problems. Some people have a genetic tendency toward mental illness. Others can develop mental health problems from stress or anxiety. Being abused or witnessing violence can cause mental health problems, as well as substance abuse. For many people, a chemical imbalance in the brain may be the cause of mental health disorders like depression.
