Who is vulnerable to mental abuse?

Mental abuse happens over time as a means of exerting control over someone. Because we are imperfect human beings, we all have vulnerabilities that can be discovered by an abuser who wants to gain control for their own purposes. Mental abusers are master manipulators that can have an impact on anyone. They know just what to say to play on someone's vulnerability. Low self-esteem is a particular favorite of abusers. People are also vulnerable during or after critical life incidents.

Mental abuse does not discriminate among economic status or age. It occurs among all ethnic and racial groups. Mental abuse is often associated with domestic abuse, where one partner is physically and mentally abusive to the other partner in a relationship. Victims of domestic abuse are commonly women. Children and the elderly are also commonly abuse victims.
