According to the latest data, 55-year-old men can expect to enjoy between-the-sheets erotic fun for another 15 years -- and for women, it's 11. We say aim higher! If you take care of your body (and mind), you can keep intimacy on the front burner till the end of your days.
To be fair, the research found that healthy choices pushed the envelope. A lot! But you can take it further. The key? Understanding that knock-your-socks-off mature sex is a whole different ballgame than fooling around in the back seat. Here are three tips to heat things up.
- Protect your potency. Factors inhibiting great sex include obesity, high blood sugar, and clogged arteries. Getting half an hour of daily exercise and munching healthy foods help. If you're still not standing at attention, ask your doc if it might be a medication side effect or an issue like depression, anxiety, or stress.
- Help your partner get ready. Hormonal changes that affect women as they age mean less lubrication. Encourage your partner not to be shy about trying water-based, off-the-shelf lubricants. Need more help? Ask her to ask her doc about longer-lasting lubricants for menopausal women or a prescription estrogen cream.
- Set the right mood. Great sex means keeping the lines of communication open. Try setting the mood with a walk or a funny movie (anything that stimulates your nervous system) instead of a third glass of wine and a heavy meal. Give yourself and your partner time for long, slow foreplay to overcome potency and lubrication issues. What better way to use your time?
